THE LOCAL AREA

Levisham is an ideal base for those wishing to have a walking, touring or restful holiday. We are within easy reach of York, Castle Howard, Harrogate, the dramatic North East coastline and of course the North Yorkshire Moors. Levisham has a railway station with the North York Moors Steam Railway train stopping to take you through wonderful scenery to other villages along the line, or enjoy a leisurely evening meal on the Pullman diner.

The nearest town of Pickering is a busy market town offering a wide variety of shops, tea rooms and restaurants, along with many interesting places to visit, including the Beck Isle Museum, Pickering Castle and the North York Moors Steam Railway. The steam train begins its journey at Pickering, travelling through wonderful valleys on route, (stopping at Levisham) to Goathland the village made famous for the BBC's 'Heartbeat' and on to Grosmont.

Moorlands Cottage provides an ideal base from where you can wander off and enjoy many tranquil walks through the forest, along country lanes and across the moors. Bring your bikes if you wish. The surrounding countryside is truly splendid and commands some of the most spectacular and breathtaking views within Ryedale.

Levisham lies within the North York Moors National Park and is located just off the A169 Pickering to Whitby road. It is a tranquil village set on a plateau between two valleys.

Sandsend
Lovely, picturesque and has beautiful sandy beaches.

Robin Hoods Bay
Famous fishing village that has links to the famous story of robin hood. The steep hill is a challenging walk but is very rewarding.

Staithes
A fishing port which is commonly known as the Dinosaur Coast.

Runswick Bay
Also popular with fossil hunters. Filey is a lovely busy town with a beautiful Promenade.

Eden Camp
Near Malton, Prisoner of War Camp, fantastic day out looking at the history from World War 2

Duncombe Park, Helmsley
Is the family stately home of Lord and Lady Feversham. Helmsleys Walled Gardens are the beautiful gardens within the grounds of Duncombe Park which also overlooks Helmsley Castle.

Goathland ‘Heartbeat’ Country
Come and visit the places made famous in the hit TV show. Also, visit the marvellous waterfall besides the Mallyon Spout Hotel

Ryedale Folk Museum, Hutton le Hole
Open air museum showing Ryedale life and cultures old and new.

York, The capital city of Yorkshire!
York Minster and the famous Cathedral in the city centre. The brilliant National Railway Museum is also a very popular day out

INLAND ATTRACTIONS

Lastingham
Lovely village with St Marys Church having what is considered to be the only crypt in England to have an apse (rounded end), the church was built in 1078

Castle Howard
Fabulous gardens, house and lake. The gardens with its garden centre and tea rooms are especially popular.

Scampston Walled Garden (Malton)
This garden has been designed and opened to the public only in 2004. The results are stunning and modern.

Dalby Forest
A walker and bikers paradise. With is superb visitors centre and award winning bike trails. Walkers and bikers alike come from far and wide to visit the Forest.

Flamingo Land
(between Pickering and Malton), Famous theme park with a zoo.

Pickering, Historic Market town
Beck Isle Museum is a great attraction with artefacts dating back over 200 years. Pickering Castle was built by William the Conqueror and attracts hundreds of visitors ever year.

North Yorkshire Moors Railway
Travel through the stunning North Yorkshire Moors on the fabulous steam trains. The service now runs to Whitby.

Thornton le Dale
A beautiful village with a stunning stream running alongside the thatched cottage. The church dates back to the 14th century and the row of almshouses and the old school date back to the early 17th century.
